Data-driven Storytelling

Information used

The information that I used was the information that we had to find last week for the project. The information that I found last week was the number of undergraduate students enrolled at UMW as of December 2023. I took the programs with the highest and lowest number of students enrolled. This information was obtained from the University of Mary Washington website.

chart with a black backtround and red bars showing each of the departments for course of study at the University of Mary Washington and the nubmer of students enrolled in each department.

Information presentation

I chose to do a short video. There are many occasions that when you are attempting to share data it can be BORING!! I know that I personally have had to sit through meetings or presentations that during that time all you could think is…this could have been an email. I chose an option that with images and “ear catching” background music would keep the attention of the viewer.

How it was made

Although I did not use video footage, I did use photographs, still images, and factual information sheet within the presentation to show the information I was trying to share. The video was made in Microsoft Clipchamp. I believe, for me at least, that is the easiest format to use to create and share your video creations.

Data Driven Storytelling

My Media Project

Word Cloud that shows most common Baby Names in New York City in 2011. The names that were the most common show up the largest on the picture.
Word Cloud that shows most common Baby Names in New York City in 2011. The names that were the most common show up the largest on the picture.

The Story

The story being depicted here is that is that popular boy names are more commonly used than popular girl names. There are many possibilities for the reason behind this; there are more variations in spellings for girl names, boys are more likely to be named after other family members, or because parents tend to be more creative and unique when it comes to naming their daughters. Whatever the reason may be, the data speaks for itself, boy names rank higher than girl names.

Type of Media

I used a Word Cloud to depict the popularity of certain names. This media shows words (or in this case, names) that are more common as bigger and words that are less common as smaller.

Process of Making the Media

To make this chart, I used excel to organize the and then I used wordart.com to turn the data into a chart.

Final Project

For my final project I am going to build out my main domain.

I am going to make it so that I can use it in job interviews or place it on my resume.

UMW Institutuinal Analysis & Effectiveness: Grade Distributuion Report: 2023-2024 Grade Distribution Summary

Grade Distribution Report 2023-2024

Undergrad Students per Department

Letter Grades per Department

What I found

While looking through the grades that were earned for the Spring semester of 2024 and the number of students that are enrolled in the different departments I noticed that Business has the largest enrollment of students. However, they do not have the hightest average grade point average. What also needs to be evaluated though is the fact that the CLPR department has a substancially lower nubmer of students than the Business Department. This causes the data to be greatly different and possibly ineffective.

Excel Sheet

Here is the link to my excel sheet, and I got my data from Data.gov

Picture of Chart

Chart that shows the average ranking of baby names based on sex and ethnicity.

Identification of Trend

The data records the names and ethnicities of babies that were born in 2011 in New York City, the chart then shows the amount of babies with this name and where its popularity ranking. The trend that I noticed in this graph is that the girls’ names tended to have higher popularity rankings than the boys’ names, no matter the ethnicity.

Methods

To make this graph. I used excel to import my data. The original chart originally had about 69,000 names but I narrowed it down to 1,934 by using only babies who were born in 2011, and by cutting out repeat names and names that were misplaced in the wrong grouping. For example, the ethnicity and genders of the baby names tended to be grouped together, but throughout the chart there would be random white female names in the wrong group. Once I cleaned up the chart, I made a pivot table which was how I noticed that the girl names rank higher in popularity than the boys’. After that, I made a bar graph based on the pivot table.

Where Found

First, I went to Data.gov and then I found a topic about fruit and vegetable prices, and I thought that was interesting. The actual data was downloaded from USDA.

Explain Trend

The price per pound of fruit rises as the size of the fruit gets smaller.

Process

I just looked at the pivot table and the numbers in excel to determine the trend.

DGST Video Project

My Video

Information about my topic

In this video, I am talking about how getting involved in school extracurriculars leads to academic success. This is because it allows you to develop skills, attain a support network, and develop personal growth & confidence. In Alexander Astin‘s theory of student involvement, Astin discusses how doing extracurriculars lets you build relationships with the people around you on campus because that’s who you surround yourself with. Morris Rosenberg talks about how personal confidence is developed by surrounding yourself with people who care about you which then makes you feel better about yourself and you take pride in the things you do.

Attribution

The intro and title cards seen in the video were created by me on Canva. The first stock footage video I used was called “A middle age man teacher wearing glasses talking to a young man” from Mixkit by an unknown creator. The next video I used was “Young business team discuss design in modern office” also by an unknown creator, found on Mixkit. The last stock video footage was found on mixkit as well, it was called “Students walking in a university” also by an unknown creator. Lastly, the music was called “Travel Nonstop” by Squadda B and I found it on YouTube’s audio library.

Process

I found the process to be very easy because I have been making videos for a long time. I have been using adobe premiere pro for years so I knew how to use it to do what I wanted. I also thought filming the videos were easy, because Apple makes recording videos very accessible, so I didn’t have to go through the learning curve of figuring out how to use a video camera. I picked YouTube because I use YouTube for everything, so again I find it very easy to understand how to use it.

Video Final

Topic

My topic is making crochet coaters for my younger siblings. I got this idea while on fall break and thought it would make an easy project. The video consists of the coasters I made, the yarn isle at Micheal’s and a shot of me working on one for the coasters. The pattern I used is the Sunrise Coaster and the yarn I used is from Loops and Threads

Credits

The pattern is Sunrise Coasters from tl yarn crafts.

The image is from Micheal’s Loops and Threads Everyday Cotton Yarn.

The opening image is from Canva, it was a presentation made by Michelle Amoruso.

The music I used is called At the Playhouse by Michael Ramir C.

The background sound effects that I used were found on Soundtrap.

Process

I used my phone to record the videos. I recorded each shot using a tripod and my phone. Most of the shots were made one after the other but it was easier to record in pieces because I had to move or grab things, and it made more sense to stop the recording than to keep it going and have to cut it. I used Clipchamp to edit the video. I picked YouTube as the streaming platform to upload my video. I picked Clipchamp because was part of Microsoft and the school already had it. I pick YouTube because I knew that I could upload the video unlisted so that most people would not be able to find it just by searching something similar.

Equipment

The equitment I will be using for this project will be my cell phone a d a tripod. I will use my cell photne to record videos and take photos. The tripod will be used for stabilizing my phone when I am speaking for some of the recordings

Shooting

A few things I plan to shoot are one of my teammates shooting on the lacrosse field, them speaking about the sport and why sports at UMW are so important, and lastly myself speaking for multiple videos.  This video footage supports my project because I am speaking on behalf of sports at UMW so interviewing my teammates will be a big part of my project.

Video Test Recording

Checkpoint Assignment: Video Shotlist & Test Recording

Why I chose my images

Although I live in a “sma ll town” the number of homeless or “unsheltered” individuals would probably surprise you. I have chosed to shoot some of the most popular “hang out” spots, a “tent city”, and one of our most popular locals who directs traffic for tips.

Equiptment Used

I am choosing to use my iPhone 13 ProMax. It has excellent recording ability for both audio and video. It is easy to find attachments to secure it to a tripod. For the topic I have chosed this is the most discret and unformitable device that I could chose.
