Who is the Internet For?

Showing the global reach of the internet

The internet is a worldwide privilege that should be accessible to all. Everyone should have access to the internet whether it something work related like submitting a business plan, or socially oriented like doomscrolling on Tiktok. The internet is something that everyone should have access to.

Openness

Why:

The open availability of the internet allows for people and businesses to reach each other and communicate. As well as gives a space for people to speak and relay information more efficiently. Being able to freely go on the internet whenever you need or want to is what makes the internet so great. It has become a tool of modern society and becomes almost essential.

How:

Anyone and everyone can make something that would be useful for someone else using the internet. Whether it’s knowledge, a skill, or personal experiences, it can provide usefulness for others. An example I love is YouTube because it can serve all purpose; whether it’s for education, entertainment, or even music. If more people would engage with the mindset of helping others by sharing, there’s no telling how much we could improve or expand.

Accessibility

Why:

Unfortunately, many don’t have the ability to use the internet to its full potential due to disabilities. Being blind or deaf hinders one’s ability to fully use the internet. Thankfully, from progressions in technology, accommodations have been made to close the gap made by these disabilities like screen narration and closed captioning.

How:

Creating accessible content may seem like extra work, but small design choices can make content easier for everyone to use. Start by organizing information with clear headings and simple language so readers can easily understand what you are trying to say. Using simple fonts and utilize high contrast color schemes. Videos and audio should include captions, transcripts, or narration so information is available in multiple formats. Images should have a descriptive alt text that explains their purpose or describes the content to users who use screen readers. Links and buttons should also use clear descriptions and not simple one-or two-word instructions. Creators should also make sure their pages can be accessed with only a keyboard and test how the content works on different devices. With how many free accessibility options are out there, it is important to keep these practices in mind with creating content. The CDC published further guidance on disability inclusion and acessibility.,
