Final project idea

Build out main domain

For my final project, I want to build out my main domain. I used to be an artist, so I want my online identity to showcase that. I could add a few photos of my art I did and write about what materials I used and why I decided to create it. I had an art series I did on how time affects things so I could discuss that concept. I want my blog to be about my hobbies and what interests me, so I think that art would be the biggest factor and my biggest supply to show. For the project part, I could make another art piece, showcase it, and discuss how and why I created it.

Topic

You can find both data sets here. I used undergraduate fall 2019, and undergraduate fall 2020. I wanted to highlight the differences that COVID-19 had on the number of students and the total F percentage grade and compare the data between the two semesters. I found that fall of 2020 had almost three thousands less students compared to fall of 2019. I also found that the total F grade percentage from fall 2020 is almost three percent higher then the total of fall of 2019.

Media reflection

Instead of making a video or a podcast, I chose to make an infographic. For data sets, I felt this was the best option, as I didn’t know how to incorporate sounds or visual elements. An infographic was the best way for me to showcase my data trends.

Process

I chose to use Canva to make my infographic. I chose a premade infographic with an aesthetic I liked and customized it to fit my data report. I then used Google Sheets to make the graphs you see at the top of the post. I only used my computer to use this project.

For my pictures of graphs, I used Google Sheets to generate them. For my infographic, I used Canva. I did not use AI on this project.

This is a chart of the average GPA’s per each department at UMW.

Charr of average total of A% vs. department.

This is a chart of the total of A% compared to each department. This is my trend analysis chart.

Link to dataset source

I found my data source from this website. I chose 2022-2023 grade distribution summary and focused on the undergraduate spring semester of 2023.

Trend explanation

For my trend analysis, I decided to analyze the average percent of A’s in each department. First, I found the average GPA’s in each department, and from there, I found the average percent of A’s. From these charts, I found that the lower the GPA for a class, the lower the A% average. For example, the PSIA department, or Political Science and International Affairs, had only a 2.5 average GPA. And only 26% of the students that semester received an A.

Process explanation

I used Google Sheets to help identify the trend. I put the data into the table and saw the averages for the GPA as well as the A% averages. I wanted to know the correlation between the two so I made separate tables. I was able to put both into pivot charts to easily identify the correlation. A’s in classes significantly help raise a GPA, so that’s why I chose those two different sections of the data.

Topic

I wanted to talk about ASMR because I really like it, and I have a lot to say on the matter. Autonomous sensory median response, or ASMR, are quiet sounds that produce a tingling sensation, like brushing your hair, that create a sense of tranquility. Psychology Today has a great article describing why ASMR is so popular and how it helps. Gazing at someone kindly, quiet sounds, and light touches are three major categories of ASMR. The most popular sound in ASMR is, not shocking, whispering. Not only is it a soothing sounds, but it also conveys the person doing the ASMR has a kind personality. ASMR University has an article that goes more in depth into the reason why ASMR and whispering is the way that it is.

Process

I recorded with my iPhone for the camera. I have a newer model, so I have good video quality, and I have the option to zoom in and out easily. The reason I chose to use my iPhone is because it was readily available and I didn’t have to rent anything. For the software, I chose to use Adobe express, which is a free video editing site. Adobe is a popular choice for editing, so I decided to try it out. It’s also free, so I thought it was the best choice. I uploaded my video to YouTube because I already had an account set up with no videos, so I thought this could be the first. I chose YouTube because I know how to upload videos easily, and it’s free to upload.

Test footage

The first scene is how I plan to record for the majority. The second scene is one instance of how I can do close-up, medium, and wide shots. The third scene is another instance of the shot wides with camera movement. For the shot transitions, in the final project, I will cut in between the takes to make a cleaner cut.

Equipment

For this video project, I plan to use a tripod for stabilizing my phone, which is what I plan to record with. I wanted to use these specific materials because I want the camera to be stable and for me to look properly lit. Without these materials, the video would be shaky and not look right.

What and why, visual media

I plan to shoot myself in a quiet, zen-like room to convey the feeling of ASMR and how it makes us feel. ASMR is known for producing feelings of calmness and relaxation. I think filming in a quiet room will produce better sounds for ASMR and feelings of tranquility.

The making of audio

What equipment?

The only two tools I used was my iPhone for the main recording and the YouTube app on my computer for the copyright-free music.

What software?

I chose to simply record on my iPhone voice memo app. I don’t generally know how to edit and record using fancy equipment, so this was the easiest tool for me. I also used the audio library from YouTube for the music choice as they are all royalty free.

Help from AI?

For this project, the only instance I used AI was for the script pacing and general talking points for this project. I also used AI for the picture above from Canva.

ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) is a tingling sensation that goes hand in hand with feelings of relaxation. The effects of ASMR is a great article that dives deep into the science as to how and why ASMR has calming effects.

This Forbes article explains a study from the University of Sheffield on how ASMR helps with stress reducing aspects related to meditation. ASMR not only reduces stress, but also helps lower levels of sadness. The participants who are frequent listens of ASMR typically have lower heartbeats while watching ASMR.

Introduction (0:00-0:20):

Introduction and explain the concept of ASMR

  • Hello everyone! Welcome back to Erin’s blog. For today’s topic, I will be discussing autonomous sensory meridian response, or as it’s more commonly known as, ASMR. ASMR is a tingling sensation felt when listening to certain sounds. The euphoric feeling starts in the scalp and works its way down the neck and spine creating a sense of tranquility.

Segment 1: ASMR triggers? (0:20-0:40)

Discuss common ASMR triggers—this is where I add two sound effects

  • There are many sounds that can trigger the tingling sensation. Like tapping *Tap my wooden dresser* or rubbing a certain material *Rub my cloth laundry bag*. The sensations send a rush of dopamine, resulting in calmness and  relaxation to the listener. Usually, the sounds are soft and quiet to trigger the tingling sensation associated with ASMR.

Segment 2: Why I like ASMR (0:40-1:10)

Talk about how ASMR helps me unwind and relax before bed

  • ASMR is a personal preference, an acquired taste, if you will. I have found that ASMR helps me with not only feeling calm, but also when I get headaches. The tingling sensation helps with appeasing the headache and helps it not hurt anymore. I like listening to ASMR right before bed to relax me. I close my eyes and just listen and focus on the sounds I hear and the sensations I have. I struggle with anxiety, so ASMR helps me and my brain with focusing on something else besides my panic attacks.

Segment 3: ASMR in Media (1:10-1:40)

Talk about the rise of ASMR on YouTube and TikTok

  • So where did it come from? ASMR became huge on YouTube a few years ago. Suddenly, everybody had a microphone and all these different sensation enhancers like brushes, water globes, and foam to squeeze on the microphone. After TikTok became global, everyone started putting ASMR on there as well as it was very popular. They gained thousands of followers who were desperate to feel the tingling sensations. And still today, sometimes I come across a TikTok live of someone doing ASMR. It’s not as popular as it once was, but people will always remember how it made them feel, so there will always be a market for it.

Conclusion (1:40-2:00)

Recap the main points discussed

  • In conclusion, ASMR not only helps with calming down and relaxation, it can help you fall asleep faster, and the tingling sensations can help with headaches. The feelings it promotes can help with anxiety, as the brain is focused on something else and ASMR can help improve mood as it calms. All in all, ASMR is a great technique for relaxation as it helps the listeners with achieving peace through sounds and sensations. Thanks for listening!

AI Copilot

I did ask Copilot to help me with pacing for a two minute interview. I kept the segment ideas but changed the sub ideas to what I want to talk about.

Topic

I chose to talk about how ASMR can be beneficial if done right. I know some people hate ASMR, but I personally love it. I want to talk about how it relaxes me at night.

How

I plan to use my iPhone with the voice memo app. I plan to record in a small study room at the end of my dorm building.

I talked about what I ate for breakfast this morning.

Digital Image creation

Additions to my blog page

Why I chose these images

For my blog banner, I wanted something simple that represented me. In the future, I want my blog to be space where I talk about music, pop culture and share photos. I think these three icons feature what I want my blog to become. For my favicon, I wanted my initials to be incorporated somehow with a simple background. I did black letters for a high contrast against the white background.

The process and software

I made my favicon first, on Canva initially. They have easy, pre-made designs that I customized to fit my aesthetic. I put it on Vectr so I could download the picture with a high resolution. Then on Vectr, I created my banner. I had a hard time trying to get other designs to fit properly. So I opted to do a simple three icon design that fits what I will put on this website. Vectr has simple irons to choose from, so I just picked some of those to add to my banner.

What file types

For my favicon, I initially downloaded it on Canva as a PNG, and then went to Vectr to download it as a JPEG. For my banner, since I created it on Vectr, I downloaded it originally as a JPEG. The reason I chose to download them as I did was because that was how the website recommended. Vectr doesn’t let you choose a different file type without buying the premium version.

Copyright and Attribution

Why copyright?

Reflections on copyright

After reading and learning more on copyright, I now know why some people chose to copyright their work, and others don’t. I learned all about different types of copyright and the different forms of access. It’s also important to give credit where it’s due. Or even attribution if credit isn’t specified. I think it’s important to educate yourself and know about how to identify if media is copyrighted or not. It’s also important to know where you can find free use media so you know where to find copyright free media every time you need it.

Why I chose my copyright

For my copyright, I chose to let other people post my work elsewhere, with credit. People can also use my work for commercial purposes. But, in unadapted form. Which means they can’t change or remix my work. I chose this copyright because I don’t mind people using my work as long as they give proper credit.

Ethically using others work

Why is it important?

Copyright is so important for many reasons. People work really hard to take photos, videos, and produce media for us to consume. If they don’t want their work to be used they absolutely have the right to refuse anyone to use or recycle variations of their work. If they require credit-give it!

Who am I on the web?

Why and how did I choose my domain name?

Why?

I wanted my name to be apart of my domain name, since it’s my domain. I didn’t want my full first name linked to it, so I decided to go with just the initial and full last name. For my subdomain, I just added dgst101 to the front to differentiate between my dgst class subdomain, and my main domain.

How?

I took the first initial from my first and middle name, and put it next to my last name. I knew my last name would be available without the initials, but I wanted my domain name to be a little more unique than just my last name.

Why domain names are important

Why?

Having a unique and easy to remember domain name is crucial to building your brand on the internet. If it’s just your name, it helps people find your domain easier, which helps get your name out the door. Creating a domain name tied to your brand or what you want to put out in the world is a great start to connect your ideas to the public.
