School Attendance Rates

Checkpoint

While looking through reference linked through previous post to see what type of data I am interested in. I settled on using Conniticuit school attendance rates because I recognized a trend and thought of a possible scenario.

Graph of attendance rate for students in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022.

Trends?

While looking at this graph you can see a large difference between the 2 school years. It is important to look at the percentages because the numbers are not far apart. There is a little over 1% decrease between 20-21 school year to the 21-22 school year. I looked at other variables documented in the data set from Data.Gov. I identified a couple possible reasons on why the attendance rate went down. There is an increase in students with disabilities and students that are homeless in 21-22 school year. This could be a possible explanation to why the attendance rate drops. I used excel to complete everything attached below.

Excel

I pulled all the data into an excel sheet once I got it off of Data.gov. I deleted a couple rows that didn’t have any bearing on the results. I cleaned the data and put it into the table. Once we completed that I pulled the percentages I wanted to graph and created that and added the proper axis titles. After this I used 2 different pivot tables to extract the data I wanted to find the answer to the lowering number.

Day in our lives!

Day in our Lives YouTube video!

Background of my short video

I decided to shoot a video of my two cats for a day in their lives. I only used one video for a type of research because I am a big fan of their channel on social media. Marley is their cat and they do day in his lives. Due to this being a vlog type of video, I didn’t use any scientific research just watching vlogs. I did however, show 2 different foods I used. They eat Purina One Grain-Free wet food and Inaba Churu’s for a little treat. I used my own iPhone to record all videos and photos displayed of their food. I used a tripod for a couple shots but not all made it into the video. I used voice memos on iPhone to create the background narration.

Credits and Editing

After I record all of my video and voice recordings, I used clipchamp to edit all videos together. I actually enjoyed this more than I enjoyed editing the podcast last week! I loved being able to see my creation come to light through watching and not solely listening, even thought I listen to podcast everyday. I preferred to upload my video on Microsoft Stream, which I did, linked here. Everytime I uploaded on here, the video wouldn’t reflect, therefore, I used YouTube to upload the video.

Video Update

My Plans

I have chosen to do a video about my cats usual day. I want authenticity so I do not want to use much false lighting because I want the natural lighting to be an actor to the story. I want you to see the changes in time during recording. I plan on using a tripod to get a couple shots and decide how much I plan to use. All videos will be muted and I will utilize my voice to do a voice over. I choose this because without narration you would just watch a muted screen with a couple meows.

Visuals

I am going to use different recourses to create a graphic for the introduction of my cat. I will be using a couple pictures to change up the dynamic of their nap cycle (they are fairly lazy cats). I will use photo’s from my own phone (with credit to the cat food brand) to have pictures of their cat foods.

Process of creating the podcast

I created a short audio project about the best cat treats. I used my phone to record the clips, then I used Soundtrap to edit all the clips. I used sound clips of my cats eating treats, purring, and meowing. I also used one cat meow audio clip from pixabay by the artist philsapphire. I used a free stock music clip from Mixkit. I used AI in the beginning when I created the outline and changed it to fit my liking.

Here are some types from your veterinarians on choosing the best treats for your cats. Tip number one, look for treats with natural ingredients and avoid artificial additives. Tip number two, cats are carnivores, therefor they want treats cooked with meat and only meat. Now tip number three, moderation is key. Cats don’t have a large belly so treats should only make up a small part of their diet.

Audio project check-point

Background of my project

I choose what cat treats are the best. I decided on this because it fits what my profile is about and I felt like there was more to discover if I choose to continue this project. I will be using my phone to record everything including my soundbites of my cats. I used it to record my snippet as well. I used AI to create the outline of my story. I changed a handful of things to fit exactly what I cared about and more accurate information.

My images

Icon

Purple bow with yellow underneath, used white lettering to fill in "Kenley's Blog"
Created by Vectr with design by Kenley, 2024.

I choose my first imagine to be a purple ribbon for my website. I used the website Vectr. I adored the purple color when I was looking at different colors. I liked the yellow underneath with a little white on the middle to state “Kenley’s Blog”. I thought about editing the name to fit better and be more visible like 2 initials instead of words. However, I like the tiny bit of white as an offset from the purple and yellow.

Header

Charlotte (my cat) over a brick background with Kenley's Blog overtop.
Created using Photopea and vector with design by Kenley, 2024

My header imagine is my actual cat. I used Photopea for the background of the brick and putting the photo on it. I created a blur on it after removing a whole bunch of white space around charlotte. Then, I used vectr again to create the writing on it. I am not a creative person therefore I wanted to use as many resources as I could. I choose to use a picture of my own cat Charlotte because I didn’t want to use a cat from one of the sites. I also choose the purple to blend with the dark blue/purple theme to not create an eyesore. Once I picked the image, I used PicResize to shrink it to properly fit without any blurriness that wasn’t intentional.

Image types

For my Icon, I used a JPEG file. I choose this type because it was what was the choice when I went to properly download the image. For the cat image in the header, it is JPG file. I also choose this because it was the option given. I prefer the JPG file over JPEG because I feel as though the image is stronger and clearer.

Process of creating

For my first image of Kenley’s Blog, I wanted something basic. Due to it being small for the website icon, I didn’t want it to be very detailed and layered. I added the ribbon and then wrote overtop of it with white lettering. For the cat image I used an already created a brick background and then added Charlotte overtop of it. After this, I took a long time trying to see how much I should cut out. I ended up choosing Char to be larger then the background of the brick. I choose black lettering because I wanted to offset the purple.

Copyright and attribution

Reflection

Copyright

To begin my reflection on copyright, i’d like to acknowledge the depth of it. Copyright is incredibly fascinating. Copyright is legal protection to a creator of work to discuss the rights and distribution. There is also many types of protections too like trademarking. Copyright is critical in part because it makes people want to be creative. Who would want to be creative if their work is never protected.

Attribution

Attribution is the form of giving credit to someone when you use their work. Attribution is also, in my opinion, a moral thing as well. If the work is free of copyright, I would still want to give them credit because it was not my idea.

Why I choose my copyright

I actually went through the website listed, Creative Commons, to choose my copyright. I went through different prompts of things I never thought of. It discussed things like commercial use and requirements for sharing my work. I choose what I did because I want anyone using my work to include proper attribution.

Other’s work

Using other peoples work is apart of many stories. In theory, everyone creates their own unique and original ideas but sometimes people have fantastic ideas for some work already created. Barbie comes to mind (maybe because the video included in the coursework in my class) but the Barbie movie was a hit and yet Barbie dolls had been around for decades. There was no disparaging the creative idea of Barbie by making the movie, it just was a different idea using the same item. I think it’s important to just credit the work you are using. Whether you have the upmost respect for someone or completely disagree with their work, it is their work. In my opinion, ethics is an important part to go along with creativity because others ideas matter just as much as yours.

Who am I to the web?

Background to my name?

The hardest part of choosing a name is trying to find something that was simple to find but unique enough to express myself. My first cat I adopted when I moved was Charlotte. I gave Charlotte a middle name, Nicole, and everyone in my family calls her Charlotte Nicole. Shortened name is Char Nicole which led to my name I choose!

Why I choose this name.

I discussed above my first cat, Charlotte, who I got the idea from. I decided to use her name because of my love for her, obviously, and not having to use my name. I understand that I am not actively hiding myself by using pseudonyms but I do enjoy the thought of any work I do be under the thought of Charlotte. It may sound weird but it does make me giggle thinking Charlotte is the name above this post i’m writing.

My life through the web.

When I search Kenley Gill, the first thing to pop up is my LinkedIn profile which actually makes me happy. I liked that the very first thing is my professional resume in a sense. Below is different things like gymnastics things and embarrassingly old photos and selfies I took before I can remember. I haven’t had much added to the web and I would like that to change.

My future through the web.

Across my social media accounts, I like to advocate. The thing I am most passionate about is anything animal related. I advocate everywhere I can on the importance of foundations like the Purple Leash Project by Purina that helps domestic violence survivors escape their situations with their pets. I also like to advocate for things like the importance on voting. Voting is the backbone of The United States and I like to stress the importance of it. I would hope I can become more than just myself for the web. I want to be able to search my name on the web and it populate with different organizations that are based on volunteers.
