Final Project

Link to My Final Project

The process to make my final project was a lot of fun! For my final project I continued with my podcast project and made three more podcast about different books. I started off by making a check list of what I needed to do for each podcast episode so I wouldn’t forget anything and it allowed my to check things off as i went. To make my podcast episodes I used Voice Memos on my phone to initially record my audio and then I used Soundtrap to edit it all together. I find Soundtrap to be very beginner friendly and easy to make adjustments with. I labelled each section of my audio recording with a number so it was easier to put them in order when putting all the clips together. After finishing the podcast portion I would use Microsoft Copilot to create images that I felt represented each book.

Accessibility

For accessibility I included transcripts for all of my podcast episodes and I included descriptive alt text for all images I used.

Media/Source Credit/Information Accuracy

For media and source credit I included links to all the resources I used to make my podcast. I used goodreads and different books wiki pages to ensure my information was accurate and made sure to provide links to all of those resources. For this project I used ZapSplat to include intro and outro music for my podcast episode and I made sure to give them credit in both my podcast episode in a section called credit/attribution at the end.

Copyright Liscense

I used CC BY-NC 4.0 license because it allows other to build off my page as long as it is not for commercial use and acknowledge that they used by information. This would allow people to build off my descriptions of the books and add their own opinions or information about the books.

AI help

I did use Microsoft Copilot to create images for each of my podcast that were engaging and still relevant to the books. I also used Microsoft Copilot to make my icon image.

Data Project Checkpoint

For my data project I have decided to analyze the amount of students in each department at UMW in the Fall 2020 semester. Here is a link to where I found this data.

Based on the data I was able to find that in Fall of 2020 UMW had the most students on the psychology department and the least amount in the dance department.

I used Microsoft Excel to separate and analyze this data. I first created my pivot table and made the axis the courses and then made the value to be the number of students per department. I then took this table and put it is order from least amount of students to most amount of students.

Final Project Idea

For my final project I want to create a new subdomain for a podcast. I want to continue with the theme of my original podcast and discuss books I have read and new books that will be released by some of my favorite authors.

Podcast Ideas

  • An episode on Lauren Roberts and her series called Powerless
  • An episode on Alex Aster and her series called Lightlark
  • An episode on Stephanie Garber and her series Once Upon a Broken Heart

Images

My Images

For both of my images I tried to keep them more on the simple side so they didn’t appear too chaotic. For my site icon I created this swirl circle and put my initials in the middle. For my site header I used stars. I used Inkscape to create both of these images. When I first started making my images it seemed kind of intimidating but I think by the end I had a basic understanding of all the features. I saved both of my images as PNGs because they work the best for icons. They allow you to make bright colorful graphics to use as your icon and the file size isn’t reduced.

Copyright and Attribution

Reflecting on Copyright and Attribution

Why I chose CC BY-NC 4.0

I choose the creative commons attribution-noncommercial 4.0 international license because it requires others to give credit but allows others to still add onto it or remix it as long as it is for noncommercial purposes.

Using the Work of Others Ethically

It’s important when using others work to make sure you give them credit and make sure to do your research before posting on the web. The way you give credit to someones work may vary depending on what creative commons license they choose. For example, A CCO license does not require others to credit you when they use your work. This is the least restrictive license you can have. A CC BY-NC-ND license allows users to view and share the work as long as they credit it; however, you are not allowed to modify their work or use it commercially. These polar opposite creative commons license, but there are several other types you can have. It’s important to make sure you give proper credit to other peoples work when using it in your own work.

There is also something known as fair use which allows people to use copyrighted work to create something else. For example, fair use can be used to critic an article, or to teach others about a topic. since fair use is a exception to copyright rules it can be difficult to define a limit to what is considered fair use and what is not.

Who am I on the Web?

My Online Identity

The Importance of Online Identities

Everything posted publicly online can be viewed by anyone at anytime. It’s important to take into consideration who will see your post when posting things online. Future employers will be able to see all of your social media and what you have posted online. To read more about the importance of online identities click this link to The New Yorker.

My life on the Web

One benefit of the web is being able to communicate with people who live all over the world. Through the web I have met lots of people with similar interest to me. For example, through discord I joined a book club and met lots of people who enjoy reading just as much as me. These friends live all over the world and only know me through my online identity.

Domains

The Importance of Domains

Domains allow people to make their content easy to access and view. It allows people to search someones content with a specific phrase. It also allows people to make digital content online for others to see.

Why?

For my domain I chose to just use my name Claire Quinn because it is simple and I can use it for several things. It broad and I can add more specific subdomains to it overtime. For my subdomain I chose “Claire’s Blog” because it is specific to this class and make it easy to identify.
